The Defining Catalyst: Parkinson's Disease (2009)
Every meaningful paradigm shift in medicine begins with an encounter standard protocols cannot solve. In 2009, Dr. LeBon's father was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease.
As Dr. LeBon recounts in his Dallas dialogues, watching a beloved parent experience relentless motor and cognitive degradation triggered an intellectual rebellion. The conventional standard of care offered only dopaminergic agonists and levodopa—drugs that temporarily masked symptoms while the underlying neuronal substantia nigra continued to perish.
“My father was diagnosed with Parkinson's in 2009, and I saw him suffering. The question that haunted me was not how do we numb the tremor, but why is he having Parkinson's? Why are these specific brain cells starving to death?”
This question redirected Dr. LeBon's career toward the engine room of the cell: the mitochondria and the cellular surveillance mechanism known as the PINK1/Parkin pathway.
He realized that when cells cannot tag, isolate, and recycle damaged mitochondria, the accumulating oxidative debris poisons neighboring structures.
